Traveling In Guatemala – Places You Shouldn’t Miss

If you are searching for a great family and fun adventure in Guatemala, here are a few places that you may want to consider going to.

Antigua Guatemala

You can’t miss Antigua if you are traveling in Guatemala or Central America. In it you may find tons of great restaurants, hotels for all budgets but most importantly beautiful scenarios. It is also home to ruins of old churches, museums, catholic churches that are still active and lots of fun bars.

Places to Check Out in Antigua:

The Earth Lodge
Chateau deFay
Finca Philadelphia
La Reunion Antigua Golf Resort

The Garifuna Town of Guatemala

In the midst of a region with very little tourist infrastructure you will find a small cute beach town called Livingston. It is the most remote town of Guatemala. It is also abundant with beauty yet to be explored because tourism hasn’t invaded it yet. While touring Guatemala’s Jade Coast, enjoy the beauty of its animals, plants and tourist attractions go for a visit to the Livingston town, home to the Garifuna people.

The Garífuna are a unique race with a language, culture, and cuisine all their own. They have been able to preserve it because of its remote location; you can only get there by boat. , This laid-back Garífuna town on the Caribbean coast is worlds apart from the rest of Guatemala.

This is what I recommend doing in this area:

 Visit Lake Izabal

Take a boat tour along Rio Dulce
Go for a swim to Seven Alters (waterfalls)
Take a tour to Las Escobas River
Visit the San Gil Ecological Reserve

Guatemala’s Largest Lake – Lake Izabal

This is known as Guatemala’s largest lake and is located in the Izabal Department. It is right in the middle of an isolated, stunningly beautiful, forested section of the country, which has only recently been discovered by tourists. This lake is perfect for those looking for some sport fishing because it is rich in perch, tarpon and other game fish. But the best part is that it is home to the cute and endangered fresh-water manatee or sea cow, a mammal that can weigh up to a ton.

If you come to this area these are the things you can’t miss:

Finca Paraiso (hot spring waterfalls)
Boqueron Canyon
El Estor
Mariscos Town
Rio Dulce Town
Chocon Machacas Biotope

Now, what to do in all those places? Well you can:

Boat Tours
Hiking
Kayaking
Fishing

There are some hotels and restaurants around but the area is not as developed in terms of tourism as Tikal or Antigua.
